Murder of Carl Bridgewater could be finally resolved after new allegations. The murder of young paperboy Carl Bridgewater at Yew Tree Farm in Staffordshire, who was gunned down at point- blank range, has remained a mystery for 4. Bert Spencer was a suspect in the case but always protested his innocence with a 'cast iron' alibi. But now, top criminologist David Wilson has blown a hole in Spencer's story, with new evidence from his own wife.. I didn’t need to be told which was his house. That’s it,’ I said. The television crew I was with looked at me as if I had developed telepathic powers, but everything I had read about Bert Spencer suggested narcissism and so, of course, his front garden would stand out from the others in the street. The others were simple with neat, trimmed, lawns – Spencer’s was crammed with pottery figures of animals and what looked like angels, a pram he’d painted white, a little wooden bridge and scattered pots of assorted plants.‘Look at me,’ the garden was saying, and ‘look at the person who lives inside this house.’ Sometimes gardens reflect the personalities of their creators. So, sometimes, do crime scenes.

Damning new allegations about his behaviour that day Bert Spencer, briefly a suspect, would fade from the picture thanks to a ‘cast- iron’ alibi. But today he is in the foreground once again. Thanks to an extraordinary Channel 4 documentary for which I interviewed Spencer over more than 2. His wife at the time, Janet Spencer, has spoken publicly for the first time to say she suspects he is the killer. She reveals how he told her he was absent from work on the day in question, that he disposed of a shotgun shortly afterwards, buried a cache of stolen antiques in the area, and uncharacteristically washed a jumper and pegged it out to dry in the hours after the paperboy was murdered. She acknowledges she has no concrete evidence, but the woman married to him for 1. Carl’s death led to the biggest manhunt for child killers since the Moors Murders, putting the local Staffordshire and neighbouring West Midlands police forces under considerable pressure to find the culprits. Four men – now known to history as the Bridgewater Four – were found guilty of the crime. But those convictions would ultimately be overturned on appeal in 1. One of the four had died in prison.

No one else has ever been successfully convicted. There was no shortage of evidence linking Spencer to the killing. Criminologist Professor David Wilson (left) conducts a series of revealing interviews with convicted murderer Bert Spencer (right)He drove a make of car that had been seen at Yew Tree Farm on the day that Carl was murdered – a blue Vauxhall Viva. The police suspected the murder was part of a robbery that had gone wrong, with antiques among the targets, and Spencer collected antiques. He owned a shotgun and knew Yew Tree Farm well as he went hedgerow hunting in the fields nearby.
Crucially, he and his family had once lived only a few doors from the Bridgewaters, meaning Carl would have known him, even if Spencer could not immediately identify the young teenager. As a result, Spencer had been interviewed several times by detectives. Yet he had an alibi – that he had been at work as an ambulance driver on the day Carl was murdered.
A secretary at work, Barbara Riebold, could vouch for his whereabouts. With Spencer ruled out, police arrested the Bridgewater Four. In November 1. 97. Stafford Crown Court, cousins Michael Hickey and Vincent Hickey, Patrick Molloy and James Robinson were all (wrongly) convicted. Case closed. The police must have been surprised when just a few weeks later, at Holloway House Farm – adjacent to Yew Tree Farm – Bert Spencer murdered his friend Hubert Wilkes, an elderly farmer for whom he gardened and chauffeured.
The killing was carried out in a strikingly similar way to the way Carl had been murdered. Spencer was found guilty of this murder in June 1. Watch The Big White Online Iflix there. Bert Spencer in his younger days Over time, Carl’s murder became just another footnote in the history of miscarriages of justice. But it is Spencer himself, now 7.
Simon Golding about the case and claiming, in a book to be published immediately after my documentary is broadcast, that he has been ‘scapegoated’ for Carl’s murder all these years. Golding approached me and asked if I would be willing to interview Spencer. I agreed but made it clear that I sought to neither incriminate nor exonerate him. I would, however, discuss some of the anomalies – the ‘rubbing points’ as I put it – about his movements on the day Carl was murdered, and test his alibi.
I would come to my conclusions based on what he told me, the evidence that I could find to confirm what he said, and as a result of any other interviews that I might be able to conduct with any key participants who were still alive. Watch Churchill Streaming. I would also gain access to a hoard of old evidence kept by the mother of one of the men wrongly convicted of Carl’s killing, and turn it over for scrutiny by a team of researchers. Unexpectedly, during my interviews with Spencer, opportunities arose to interview Barbara Riebold and Spencer’s first wife Janet, who was there when he murdered Wilkes and who could also tell me about Bert’s behaviour on the night Carl was murdered. It was the first time in 3. Barbara admitted she could not verify Spencer’s whereabouts for the entire day on which Carl was shot.
She said she had made a police statement to this effect, although this does not seem to have been pursued at the time, even though it undermines the idea of there being a ‘cast- iron’ alibi. Janet went further still, telling me she believed her husband was guilty of Carl’s murder, and disclosed damning new allegations about Spencer’s behaviour on the day Carl was murdered. She said she found a green jumper hanging on a clothes line that Spencer had washed for himself and which she never saw again; that he admitted to her that he wasn’t at work all day on the date Carl died – September 1.
Carl’s killing. She also said that Spencer had buried a bag of stolen antiques somewhere around the Prestwood area after he was caught hiding them without permission in a friend’s shed. These were extraordinary allegations, but I felt that I could trust what these women said to me. That wasn’t the case with Spencer. During my interviews with him, I became so concerned about whether he was telling me the truth that I conducted a P- scan on him – a scientifically devised questionnaire that helps identify people with psychopathic traits. It does not provide a clinical diagnosis of psychopathy but rather an ‘early- warning system’ that the person being interviewed should be approached with an unusual degree of caution, suspicion and cynicism and that everything said needs careful cross- checking.
